Route 81 runs Monday through Saturday along Haven Avenue, which encircles the airport's eastern edge between Chaffey College and Ontario-East station (where travelers can change to the Riverside Line of Metrolink during weekday rush hour).

History of Ontario Airport

On property leased from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1923, a landing field was built east of Central Avenue (about 4.8 km west of the existing airport). There was an orange packing plant close to the airstrip.

One of the first flying clubs in Southern California, the Friends of Ontario Airport, established a runway there. Ontario Municipal Airport was founded in 1929 after the city of Ontario paid $12,000 to purchase 30 acres in the airport's present-day southwest corner.

The city purchased 470 acres of land adjacent to the airport in 1941. It gave the go-ahead to build new runways, which were finished by 1942 thanks to WPA funding.

It was one of five extensive facilities constructed by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to store, sell, and shred Army Air Forces aircraft after the war. The others were located at Albuquerque AAF in New Mexico, Altus AAF in Oklahoma; Kingman AAF in Arizona; and Walnut Ridge AAF in Arkansas.

Since it was the departure point for trans-Pacific cargo flights, Ontario Municipal Airport became Ontario International Airport in 1946. The airport received two steel hangars from the Army on May 17, 1946. The purchase, for $50,000, was approved by the Ontario municipal council only a week ago. The city was delighted with its bargaining position.

The first regularly scheduled flights by Western Airlines took place in 1949, followed by those of Bonanza Air Lines in 1955. The range of Western and Bonanza nonstops was limited to that of Las Vegas. Western Airlines' first nonstop flights to San Francisco were in 1962. Bonanza's F27 continuous service to Phoenix commenced that year.

As a result of a 1967 joint-powers agreement between Ontario and Los Angeles, Ontario International Airport became a component of the Los Angeles regional airport system.

The airport saw its first scheduled jet flights in 1968. The following year, Continental Airlines began nonstop flights on the Boeing 720B to Denver and Chicago, Air California started to serve on the Boeing 737 to San Jose, Pacific Southwest Airlines began service to San Francisco, and Western began service on the Boeing 737 to Sacramento and Salt Lake City.

United Airlines nonstop service to Chicago began that same year, 1970, while American Airlines' service to Dallas also began that year. While on a promotional journey around the world in September 1986, the Concorde supersonic airplane stopped in Ontario.
